I guess while writing this I am still not sure that this will make it to the blog but I had to write about it. I have never come so close to dying as I did about an hour ago. We were out on a pier hanging out watching a kid surf and it thought it would be fun to jump off the pier and swim back into shore. Looking at it you could see that there was a strong current takin you towards the pier but it seemed once you got out a bit you could just swim back into land. So after much trepidation I jumped in. For accuracy I did a full. Started swimming out away from the pier and was pretty tired but felt ok but was treading water ok and thought I could manage to get back so I start swimming towards shore and quickly realize this isn't going to be as easy I thought. There was a pretty strong current taking me out. Eventually a surfer had to come over and let me tread water at that point I figured I would be ok but we weren't really able to paddle anywhere. Long story short a couple lifeguards jumped in but we weren't going to be able to make it in so a rescue boat was sent to get me. We got to the shore and the boat had to go out and try to her the lifeguards who eventually made it to shore on their own strength but were quite tired. It drew a lot of attention and I felt really stupid but was quite the experience. I never felt like I might not make it but certainly had some doubt especially before the surfer came. My next plan of action was to swim to the pier and grab on to the pylons which were covered in muscles and the results would not have been very pleasant. Glad they had some very capable lifeguards. It could have been much worse. I got way in over my head and am glad things turned out the way they did.
We got back to shore. I had Brandt give the first two lifeguards some money and we slipped into the crowd. I didn't really want to answer any questions or anything fun like that.
This happened back in Durban and way out of order.
