Penguins

We are in the train now and it sounds like the train is going to fall apart. Every time it stops it shakes. And the brakes squeal and you wonder if it's going make the stop. It's by far the cheapest way to get around. It's crazy how much barbed wire they use in this country. Traveling by train is a cool way to get to see the country though.

One of the hard things about being out here is the beggars. They are extremely pushy and although you feel bad for them you can't afford to give them all money. One of them got pretty aggressive with Brandt on the way to the train station but ran off when we walked by the police.

We are on the train to Simons town  and the views are incredible. It runs right along the water.

Views from the train

There are a bunch seaside towns that you go through to get there. One the way down we got on a train car and were the only white people on it. It was fun. People trying to hawk candy and chips. Occasionally blind people coming through the train singing and a guy playing guitar. It really was a nice ride down.

Just saw the penguins on boulder bay and it was pretty cool. When we first got into town we started walking along the shoreline and ran into out first penguin. I thought it had these cool red markings on its neck but it turned out it was missing a good chunk of its head.

Penguins are pretty funny to watch. Really clumsy on the ground. Far more impressive in the water. Then we stopped at a cafe for lunch on our way back to the train station and are planning on making some stops in some of the towns on the way back.

We are at the hostel now. It's called penthouse on long or something like that. It's just a hostel. We are staying in a room with 22 beds. It's probably nicer than any of the other places we stayed. I took the first warm shower since I got here. It's clean and fairly nice.

One of the cities right off the train route.

The view from the roof of the hostel. There is a bar out there.
